Purses for PAWS

Member announcement and request by Aunty Min’s Specialized Pet Care:

Hello, everyone, I’m a member of BBW and was at the last networking meeting hosted by Rickie.  I am also on the BOD of PAWS of Bainbridge Island & North Kitsap and I am working on a brand new event that we’re doing in May called Purses for PAWS. As I mentioned, this is an inaugural event for us and I wanted to see if I could somehow spread the word through the BBW.  Also, we would like to give each attendee a goody bag so I wanted to offer up the opportunity to members if they’d like to include something in the goody bag. For example, I am putting in a customized mint tin, Susan Wiggs is donating a book (she’s also our presenting sponsor), another person is doing a little baggie w/ some chocolates, someone else is offering $$ off a massage.  So, we’re looking for actual “items” as opposed to only business cards.  We’d like to have a nice bag for the ladies!  :)

Thank you!
Mindy

Purses for PAWS
Sunday, May 15th
Sogno di Vino – downtown Poulsbo
2pm – 4pm

Spend a fun afternoon w/ your girlfriends!  You can shop while you sip!  A ticket to this event might be a nice Mother’s Day present, too!  Since I’m on the committee, I’ve been lucky enough to see most of the items that have come in – WOW….Coach, Gucci, Piero Guidi, Dooney & Bourke, Cole Haan, Ann Taylor, Vera Bradley and many more designer bags…. evening bags, leather, suede, big, small, international, leather, fabric – you name it, we probably have an item that fits your needs!  We have only accepted “gently loved” or new items.  I am in handbag heaven, let me say!  Not to mention the jewelry!!!  Oh my, if you can’t tell – I’m excited for 5/15!  :)

We only have a limited number of tickets – so, don’t wait!  And, please feel free to tell your friends.  This is a fundraiser – so all your $$ goes to a wonderful cause – specifically the PAWS Hartstone Spay/Neuter Fund (which provides minimal-cost sterilization surgeries for the pets of low-income families).

You can download the flyer, here: Purses for PAWS Flyer.

Please feel free to print the flyer and put out at their businesses and/or forward to friends, that would be great!! Below is a link to the website – there are a few items to show you some of the variation.  We want to sell out and have a successful – and FUN – event!!!!

Dawn Snider, eco-consultant with Green Irene

Green Irene Logo - Dawn Snider, eco-consultant located in Bainbridge Island, WA 98110Dawn Snider, an eco-consultant affiliated with Green Irene, LLC, became acutely aware of the need for sustainability when she lived in the high desert of Santa Fe, N.M., where many residents, rely entirely on well water. “Being very careful of water usage in a desert environment raised my consciousness of conserving what we have and taking care of our responsibilities to the community and the planet,” says Dawn.

Today, Dawn is helping her clients—both individuals and small businesses—reduce their energy and water consumption and make their homes and businesses more earth-friendly. As Green Irene’s motto states, they are “Greening the world, one home and office at a time.”

Green Irene, LLC, based in Manhattan, is represented by a network of company-trained consultants, like Dawn, who offer the services and related eco-friendly products. The two primary services are the “Green Home Makeover” and the “Green Business Certification” in which Dawn reviews the client’s home or small business and suggests ways to improve in areas such as:

  • Energy conservation
  • Lighting
  • Water usage and purity
  • Toxins in the home
  • Air quality
  • Recycling and waste reduction
  • Improved office sustainability

Islander Julie Riely is a recent client. She says Dawn “provided excellent modification suggestions without making me feel ‘ungreen.’ The most important aftermath of Dawn’s visit was the renewed focus it brought to our desire to green up our lives. Seeing our home through Dawn’s eyes, combined with her comments, helped us recommit to our goal.”

In addition, Green Irene offers “Go Green” workshops, in-home educational sessions where attendees can order Green Irene products. The catalog includes everything from enzyme-based cleaning products and LED lights to earth- and kid-friendly glue, markers, and paint. This year’s Chilly Hilly volunteers served chili in Green Irene compostable bowls, and the Rotary Auction used the compostable tableware for its volunteer meals in 2010.

The Green Irene product catalog is available to organizations such as schools and nonprofits for fundraising events. The sponsoring organization gets 20 percent of all sales.

Bainbridge Islanders who are participating in the energy assessments offered by the RePower Bainbridge program may find Dawn’s services and solutions to be a natural follow-up. Right now, here are some big, easy fixes you can make:

• Slay the “energy vampires” by putting your electronics on a master power strip and switching it off when you’re not using them.
• Turn down the temperature on your water heater to 120 degrees (112 degrees burns the skin).
• Set your computer to go into a sleep or hibernate mode after 10 to 15 minutes of being idle.

“I want people to realize that they don’t have to reduce their comfort level to have a more sustainable lifestyle,” notes Dawn. “I wouldn’t ask anyone to make these changes if I wouldn’t do them. And you will see financial rewards.”

Besides the Bainbridge Business Women networking meetings, you may meet Dawn at Sustainable Bainbridge events such as Green Drinks or volunteering for its Zero Waste initiatives.

Kim Hewes, Juice Plus+: Helping People in Their Decision to be Healthier

Kim & Gordon Hewes

Eighteen years ago, Kim Hewes was expecting her first child and working at Nordstrom. Her husband, Gordon Hewes, was working as a contractor in PR at Boeing. Boeing announced a hiring freeze, and Gordon began looking for other income opportunities.

He discovered a company called NSA, which sold water and air filtration products through franchisees. He attended an NSA conference to learn more about the company, and it was there that NSA introduced Juice Plus, a new nutrition product. “Gordon was surprised,” recalls Kim, “and we’re normally very skeptical, so we were unsure about pursuing it.”

Kim Hewes "I love supporting people in their decision to be healthier, espcially knowing the different it's made in my own family's health."Fast-forward to today: What began as an interim opportunity for Gordon has turned into a full-time business for both Kim and Gordon, as well as the foundation of a healthier lifestyle. They long ago replaced both incomes with their Juice Plus business. They sell to clients anywhere—it’s a “virtual” franchise. They also offer “Prevention Plus” health- and nutrition-related lectures provided by industry professionals who are associated with Juice Plus. Kim points out, “We don’t make sales or talk about the business opportunity behind Juice Plus at the lectures.” The events typically attract 60 to 100 people.

Kim says her initial skepticism helps her understand other people’s skepticism when it comes to nutrition products such as Juice Plus. It is not a vitamin, but the result of fruits and vegetables that are juiced and then converted to powder. Fiber is added to the mix, and the result is a whole food supplement that is sold as capsules or chewable tablets. According to Kim, unlike vitamins, Juice Plus is not subject to Washington state sales tax because the state recognizes it as a food product.

Kim stresses that Juice Plus is not intended to be a replacement for the healthy eating guidelines established by the USDA. According to the website, www.juiceplus.com, it’s meant to “bridge the gap between the 7 to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables recommended by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the nutrition you actually get with your busy schedule.”

Kim has flourished both career-wise and health-wise over the last 18 years. “I love supporting people in their decision to be healthier,” she says, “especially knowing the difference it’s made in my own family’s health.” She also appreciates the connections she makes through Bainbridge Business Women. “I enjoy hearing about what others are doing,” she says.
